Museum presenting Chagall's 17 great canvases of the biblical message in Nice, hosts classical music concerts.
Conceived during the artist's lifetime and inaugurated in 1973, this national museum presents the largest public collection of the painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985). The permanent collection presents works inspired by certain episodes of the Bible(Genesis, Exodus, Song of Songs) which the painter considered to be the greatest source of poetry of all time.
The museum's collection originated with the donation of the Biblical Message in 1966, supplemented by the collection given by Marc Chagall and his wife Valentina Brodsky in 1972, adding all the preparatory work and many other works (gouaches, engravings, sculptures, lithographs, ceramics, mosaics, etc.). It is a unique set (nearly 900 works today) where technical virtuosity, colorful inventions and universal message of peace are combined that Chagall wished to transmit to future visitors of his museum. Located in Cimiez, the museum is surrounded by a Mediterranean garden, designed by landscape architect Henri Fisch, in a harmony of greens, whites and blues. Its open and luminous architecture was designed by André Hermant, in collaboration with Chagall himself, who wished to build a "house" to house his painted cycle of the Biblical Message. The artist also offered monumental works such as the stained glass window of The Creation of the World, which bathes the concert hall in its blue light, as well as the mosaic of the Prophet Elijah , which is reflected in the museum's outdoor pool.
