Museum with an elegant country house, surrounded by a magnificent garden with majestic palms, housing works of the painter from Grasse

This elegant late 17th century bastide, surrounded by a lush garden with large palm trees, houses the works of the famous Grasse painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard and his descendants. This residence, one of the first built outside the city center, belonged to three ancient Provencal families before a rich perfume merchant, Alexandre Maubert, bought it. A cultivated Grasse native and musician, Maubert was the cousin of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whom he welcomed in 1790-91 when the political situation forced him to flee Paris.

The city of Grasse acquired this country house in 1977 to turn it into a museum dedicated to the works of Fragonard, the local child, and those of the painters in his family, including his son, grandson, sister-in-law and great-grandson, a talented sculptor who died prematurely. The exceptional trompe l'oeil decoration in the staircase by Alexandre Évariste, son of Fragonard, was classified as a historical monument in 1957.

To visit this elegant mansion steeped in history and, above all, to participate in various cultural and experimental activities, you must first make an appointment with the museum's very friendly staff. It is a beautiful tribute paid by the city to its most famous child, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and to his artistic family. The beautiful garden, the historical artworks and the trompe-l'oeil decoration are worth the detour. A real favorite.

Une honte ! !!
