SAINT JOHN'S BAPTISTERY
Europe's oldest Christian monument, the building houses a rare baptismal pool built in the century.
Right next to the Musée Sainte-Croix, the Baptistery of Saint-Jean proudly displays its age and its ochre. Here it is, one of Europe's oldest early Christian monuments, mostly built in the5th century, but with the oldest parts dating back to the 4thcentury , the time of Saint-Hilaire, the first bishop of Poitiers. The site houses a rare baptismal pool used for baptism by immersion until the 8th century, magnificent Romanesque and Gothic wall paintings and a collection of Merovingian sarcophagi from the region.
