The culture of the vine already existed in the Gallo-Roman period, the vineyard of Poitou will be thereafter witness of the wars which opposed the Franks to the Visigoths, the Umayyad invasion completed by the victory of Charles Martel in 732. In spite of all this turmoil, a know-how and a passion were born, which are still alive today. The vineyard reached its peak in the 19th century with 44,000 hectares of vines. Thanks to the progress of exploitation, it obtained the label VDQS then AOC.
