THE VILLAGE OF LA GARETTE

This village in the commune of Sansais-La-Garette is one of the most typical of the Marais Poitevin. Along the pedestrian street, old fishermen's houses set the scene, all with direct access to the water. The most famous of the first local "tourists" was a certain Henri de Navarre, future Henri IV, who passed through the village in 1576. It is also worth mentioning that it was here that Célestin Cardinaud, at the beginning of the 20th century, invented the concept of pleasure boating on the water, thus transforming the use of traditional "batais" into tourist boats. This pioneering inspiration is now widely acclaimed. On the hillside, Sansais, the other village of the commune, has a more classical habitat grouped around its Saint-Vincent church and its castle. Also to be seen in the surroundings, the Maison du Cheval, the dam-lock of Chail and the educational trail to discover the fauna and flora of the Marais.
