The halles de Niort are home to a lively covered market on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Inaugurated in 1871, they were inspired by the Parisian covered market in Nogent-sur-Marne. They are of the Baltard type and are made of cast iron, glass and steel. On the pediment, Ceres and Mercury are represented, symbolizing the union of trade and land.
