Europe's best-preserved castle. Numerous family activities.
The fairy Melusine is said to have built "her castle" in three nights, carrying the stones in her apron. This 13th-century fortress, the best-preserved in Europe, was built at a time when the Hundred Years' War was tearing Valois and Plantagenet apart. Eight of its fourteen perfectly preserved rooms are open to the public. Its winch drawbridge, high courtyard and peripheral shaft, and almond-shaped towers make it a must-see! Starting off with a walk around the outside with views of the towers, the curtain wall and ditch.
This is followed by access into the castle which includes some nice rooms.
There are descriptions of the different areas in French and English.
The staff are lovely too.
We went midweek at the end of June and it was really quiet, the castle is north of Niort and quite isolated so maybe worth a trip if passing as there is not much else in the area.
