One of the timeless symbols of the Gallo-Roman city, it marked the main entrance to the town at Sainte
Like the arena, this is one of Saintes' most symbolic buildings. Built around 18-19 AD, it marked the main entrance to the town, each of its arches corresponding to a particular direction of traffic. Prosper Mérimée decided to move it, leaving it on the right bank of the river. This monument, one of the finest Gallo-Roman remains, is decked out in color, especially during the festive season.
