Church built by Cluny monks to welcome pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela and serve as a place of prayer
This jewel of Romanesque art, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built by the monks of Cluny. It was built by the monks of Cluny to welcome pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, and to serve as a place of prayer. In 1803, noting the poor condition of the roof, the prefect of the time ordered the demolition of the nave. Mysterious and remarkably well-preserved, this basilica offers a unique experience to all who visit its crypt, one of the largest in Europe! Visitors can also admire the recently sculpted modillions.
