A royal abbey founded in 817 and once attracting crowds of worshippers who wished to worship there.
Founded in 817 by Pepin, the Carolingian king of Aquitaine, the royal abbey attracts crowds of worshippers who wish to worship before the head of St. John the Baptist, to whom miracles were attributed. Plundered by the Vikings in 861, damaged by wars, the abbey was destroyed in 1568. A visit of the towers is a must, open to all. The Royal Abbey is classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site as part of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.
