This castle located not far from Villebois-Lavalette, is considered as the "Little Versailles of Charente"
Not far from Villebois-Lavalette, the Château de la Mercerie is considered as the "Little Versailles of Charente", so much its beauty is without equal. Originally it was a neo-gothic manor dating from the 19th century. In 1924, the brothers Alphonse and Raymond Réthoré acquired the castle and decided to enlarge it. Between 1939 and 1975, the two brothers put together a collection of artworks that took part in the enchantment of the place. At their death, the building was abandoned and fell into oblivion, its collections dispersed. The castle can now be visited by appointment only. You can observe the singular architecture of the site, its white stone facades. All around the castle, the park of 7 ha and an arboretum of 45 ha of rare species has also been restored.
