CITY WALK
The town of Chabanais has a memorial to the battles of 1944 that is a must-see during the walk
As you wander around Chabanais, try to spot the half-timbered house (rue Palant-Lamirande), the old staircase of the late Saint-Sébastien church, or the hamlet of La Quintinie, named after Jean de La Quintinie, born in Chabanais and creator of the vegetable garden of Versailles, appointed Director of Gardens by Louis XIV. You will also discover the monument commemorating the battles of 1944. Indeed, on1st August 1944, during the battle of Chabanais, Colonel Bernard's maquisards and a German division fought a fierce confrontation. The bridge was destroyed by the Resistance fighters. The maquisards finally managed to push back the Germans and avoid another Oradour-sur-Glane, a sadly known village about thirty kilometres away.
