La Chaussée des Moines is a must-see site in Vertou. It is a real holiday resort with its restaurants and its river base. It is part of the Sèvre park which offers a green and relaxing setting with a playground for children, petanque grounds... This "Chaussée des moines" is a kind of dam that connects the Chêne district to the lower part of the town. It was built by monks around the year 1000 to meet three objectives: to create a sufficient water reserve to allow navigation upstream to Clisson, to allow the installation of a water mill which would provide the flour necessary to the monks and finally to ensure the passage between Le Chêne and the central town. Afterwards, a lock was built to allow the passage of boats, a lock still in activity today. Several hiking trails leave from or lead you to the Chaussée, now equipped with a pass allowing fish to pass through the obstacle and colonize the Sèvre watershed. Moreover, on the other side of the road, the walk continues in the Loiry park where there is a canoeing and kayaking base, a skatepark and a mini-golf course.
