THE CHAMBER OF CHARITIES OF SAINT-ÉLOI
One of France's oldest brotherhoods, the chambre des charitables de Saint-Éloi, founded in 1188 in Béthune.
Founded in 1188, the Confrérie des Charitables de Saint-Éloi is one of the oldest in France. During a plague epidemic, two blacksmiths, Germon and Gauthier, crossed paths with Saint Éloi, who asked them to found a charity to help the poor, care for the sick and bury the dead, whatever their condition. A chapel has been erected in the Quinty park, on the site of the founders' famous meeting with the saint.
