Wellington underground quarry in Arras, used as a shelter for soldiers, now more immersive and interactive, to visit.
November 1916, the British prepare the offensive that will take place on April 9, 1917 at 5:30 am. Their idea: to have the New Zealand tunnel boring machines connect the city's chalk quarries to create a veritable network of underground barracks. Go down to a depth of 20 metres to discover this strategic place which was also the daily life of the soldiers of the Great War. In April, don't miss the annual ceremony that pays tribute to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who took part in the Battle of Arras.

Located in Arras, this First World War memorial invites you to plunge into the bowels of history. This network of underground galleries, once mined for chalk, was transformed into a veritable secret fortress by New Zealand Tunnellers in 1916. Built 20 meters underground, the site was created to house 24,000 soldiers in preparation for the spring offensive of 1917. Descending into these depths, you'll discover a labyrinth of corridors retracing the history of the Battle of Arras as you meet the British soldiers. Walking in their footsteps, you'll share in the excitement of the impending assault. You'll also be impressed by the chalk walls, marked by graffiti and inscriptions, recounting the hopes and fears of these men. Guides in period uniforms add a touch of authenticity to the tour. A visit to the Wellington Quarry also includes an English-style breakfast. A must-see place to discover the history of the heroes of the Great War!

La visite se fait en petit groupe avec un guide. Un audio guide permet d'avoir les explications des vidéos proposées. Nous étions avec notre fils de 8 ans qui était totalement captivé. Prévoir une veste, il fait un peu frais. Penser à réserver pour ne pas attendre. À visiter !
