PLACE LAFAYETTE
This superb square features a remarkable fountain and is surrounded by arcades. It is home to Villeneuve's must-see market.
In the heart of the city, this charming square, lined with arcades, comes alive every Saturday with the rhythm of the market. It pays tribute to local benefactor Dr Alexandre Guyot, who in 1835 bequeathed a sum of money to build a fountain here, on condition that the Place Publique became Place Lafayette. The city agreed, but it wasn't until 1872 that the water began to flow. In 2024, the square was restored to its former glory thanks to a major refurbishment. It's a great place to stroll, linger on a terrace or simply enjoy the gentle arcades.
