Petit Futé's opinion on STRONG DUNES

Vintage plate 2020

The Fort des Dunes is an example of the military architecture designed by General Séré de Rivières to reinforce the French defensive system after the country's defeat in the Franco-Prussian wars. Built in 1878 to protect Dunkirk and its port from any attack from the east, its barracks were designed to house 450 soldiers. During the Second World War, it was the heart of Operation Dynamo, which was the largest embarkation in history, allowing the evacuation of 338,000 Allied soldiers. On1 June 1940, during this operation, two bombs fell on the fort which housed the headquarters of the 12th Motorized Infantry Division, led by General Janssen. General Janssen was killed, as were a hundred soldiers. The fort then fell into enemy hands. In September 1944, eight resistance fighters were executed there by the Nazis. After the Liberation, it became a camp for German prisoners. Built in sand bricks and culminating at 27 m, the fort finds a natural setting in the dunes. Inside, numerous photographs and animated models allow visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of the fort. To complete your visit, don't hesitate to explore the fort's exterior with the audio guide provided by the museum. Temporary exhibitions also complete the visit to the museum. An essential visit to understand the history of Leffrinckoucke and to celebrate the memory of the heroes who fell for France.

Owner's Message STRONG DUNES

Erected in 1878, the Fort des Dunes was designed to ensure the advanced defence of the port of Dunkirk. It was during the Second World War that the fort went down in history as the headquarters of the 12th Motorised Infantry Division, responsible for delaying the German advance, enabling 338,000 soldiers of the Allied armies to be repatriated during Operation Dynamo.

The Fort des Dunes is a major site of Operation Dynamo and World War II: remains of the Atlantic Wall, traces of the resistance. Its architecture is of the Séré de Rivière type with caponières, crossing shelters and dry ditches. It is a belvedere in the heart of the dunes of Flanders, a remarkable natural site.

The Fort now offers a brand new scenography at the cutting edge of technology, retracing the history of the Fort and its territory. From the Battle of the Dunes in the 17th century to Operation Dynamo in 1940, the new route immerses visitors in history via modern and educational tools, accessible to all.
