A masterpiece of military architecture, this bastion symbolizes France's response to the lessons of the Franco-Prussian wars.

The Fort des Dunes is an example of the military architecture designed by General Séré de Rivières to reinforce the French defensive system. Built in 1878 to protect Dunkirk and its port, its barracks were designed to house 450 soldiers. Built of sand bricks and reaching a height of 27 m, the fort finds a natural setting in the dunes.
