ZUYDCOOTE BATTERY
The Battery of Zuydcoote is built in yellow bricks, which allows it to blend perfectly into the dunes.
Built in 1878 as an annex to the Fort des Dunes, its role was to protect Dunkirk from any attack from the east by sea, and to watch over the passage to Zuydcoote. Like the Fort des Dunes, the so-called "batterie de l'Est" was built of yellow bricks, enabling it to blend in perfectly with the dunes. It was later completed with reinforced concrete buildings. First used by the Allies, it was soon taken over by the Germans, who incorporated it into their Atlantic Wall coastal defense system.
