CITÉ DE GUESNAIN
A city worth visiting for its sober modern buildings in a beautiful setting, while its older buildings have been replaced by a lake
The Cité de Guesnain no longer looks the way it did until the 1980s. At that time, the first housing units built by the Compagnie des Mines d'Aniche in 1901 were demolished, leaving only the most modern houses. They gave way to a lake, around which it's very pleasant to stroll. The most modern buildings are the work of the Groupe de Douai, built between 1947 and 1953. Although they are very sober, they are set in charming surroundings and have been awarded Unesco status.
