The Musée de la bataille de Fromelles, housing archaeological digs, is an essential reminder of the past.
Created in 2014, one hundred years after the terrible Battle of Fromelles, which claimed more than 8,500 lives in a confrontation between British and Australian soldiers and a Bavarian division, this museum is as much a witness to this bloody page of history as it is a spokesperson for the thousands of soldiers who perished. In 2009, an archaeological excavation campaign was launched and hundreds of bodies were identified, contributing to the essential work of remembrance.

On July 19 and 20, 1916, the Battle of Fromelles took place on a 4-kilometer front. The British 61st Division and the Australian 5th Division clashed with three Bavarian regiments. The attack resulted in the disabling of some 8,500 men.
This museum combines archaeological and scientific techniques, history and the fate of the soldiers involved in the Battle of Fromelles.

On the 19th and 20th of July 1916, a battle took place in Fromelles. The British 61st Division and the 5th Australian Division faced three Bavarian Regiments.
The attack caused almost 8,500 casualties. Among them, over 1,500 soldiers were missing at the end of the war.
In 2009, 250 soldiers from mass graves in Fromelles have been exhumed by a scientific team of archaeologists, anthropologists and forensic experts, with the purpose of identifying them.
