LA LONGUE BORNE
A milestone that served as a landmark for lepers on their way to a nearby leprosarium, a monument not to be missed
The Long Bollard is an astonishing sandstone column, almost three metres high. Twisted, with no inscription, it surprises passers-by in a fairly modern neighborhood. It stands near the eastern end of the commune, and not for nothing: in the Middle Ages, this pillar was a landmark for lepers on their way to a nearby leprosarium. Since leprosy is highly contagious, the Long Bollard was intended to show them at a glance which perimeter they could not cross, so as not to endanger the inhabitants.
