Museum of France in Cahors presenting many new paintings by the painter Henri Martin, including his major works.
The Henri-Martin Museum, a French museum, has been installed since 1929 in the former episcopal palace of Cahors. It has undergone major work between 2018 and 2022 which has doubled its surface area, renovated its architecture and, in particular, welcomed some major works of the eponymous painter such as La Fenaison or Le Monument aux morts, two monumental paintings. Henri Martin, a post-impressionist painter, chose to live in Labastide-du-Vert during the summer months for 40 years, painting the light of the Lot that he loved so much. In addition to two rooms dedicated to him, the Henri-Martin Museum houses the history of Cahors over 21 centuries of art, with medieval and Gallo-Roman remains presented on the first floor. One room is dedicated to the work of Edmée Larnaudie, a painter of sacred art between the two world wars, another to Léon Gambetta, and yet another to classical fine arts. The Henri-Martin Museum's collection contains remarkable and sometimes unusual works: an anthropomorphic sculpture, known as the "goddess or Venus of Capdenac", dating from the Neolithic period (not on permanent display); the oil on canvas Les Laveuses du bord du Lot by Sarkis Diranian; or the god Rongo, a wooden sculpture representing the god of rain in Oceania, a rare and astonishing piece found in the chapel of the former episcopal palace. Temporary exhibitions keep the museum alive throughout the year. The new museum space is a perfect setting for art in the heart of Cahors.

Closed from mid-January to mid-February. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm. Free admission up to age 17 (as well as for social minimum beneficiaries, job-seekers, persons accompanying disabled persons, asylum-seekers and students of history or art). Adults: €8 (with temporary exhibition, otherwise €5 for the permanent collection alone). From 5pm, admission is €2 (1h visit). Children welcome. Guided tours. Animations.
