LIOUVILLE FORT
This fort was the only defensive curtain in the Hauts de Meuse region, enabling us to control the passageways and defend the plain.
Fort de Liouville is located in the commune of Apremont-la-Forêt. Part of the Séré de Rivières line, its position enabled it to control crossings over the Meuse and defend the Woëvre plain. The fort, built of masonry between 1876 and 1878, was the only one of the Hauts de Meuse defensive curtain to feature armour plating. Its strategic role in the sector led to its modernization between 1890 and 1910. It distinguished itself in September 1914 during the formation of the Saint-Mihiel Salient, a period during which it was heavily shelled.
