It is a shocking place, especially the church where the women and children were massacred. Only 1 woman survived by jumping out of the window. How she reached the window, I do not know as it is high up. It is important for history that the ruined village has been preserved.
The SS version of the story is that French partisans had massacred German prisoners and a medical unit as well as telling the SS commander that they had captured his friend and were going to burn him alive in Oradour-sur-Vayres. The SS commander went crazy with rage and a mistake in looking at a map led to him going to Oradour-sur-Glane for revenge. He could not find any partisans so took revenge against the only "enemy" he could find, the civilians.
The only preserved ruin in Russia I have seen is a mill in Stalingrad. Everything else of the 70,000 destroyed towns and villages in Russia and the Ukraine in WW2 was rebuilt.
Very moving story about the genocide that happened here at the hands of the nazi’s
We were advised that we didn’t need the audio guide when we entered the exhibition as the displays had English translations . However we realised after it would have been useful as the 12 minute film had very limited English subtitles.
The story of Oradour sur Glane is very heavy. It is interesting to bring and explain the new generations what happened there to do not forget but also to never live the same again.
A very moving experience, it certainly is a very apt monument for a very important part of our history, a must see experience to remind us about the futility of war and how it can affect so many lives.
Parking a proximité.
There were very few people here when we visited. We walked up and down the streets and peering into every cranny. It is creepy looking at what was once a thriving community that was obliterated in June of 1944 - items just left as they fell.
I hear the Nazis attempted to hide this crime but the truth came out and the French Government made this murdered village a time capsule so people can see what happened here.
Sadly it still happens in parts of the world today.
