ABBEY CHURCH OF SAINT BARTHÉLÉMY
Church with a massive bell tower-porch, a poly-lobed entrance portal and an octagonal lantern on the transept crossing
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, this church is typical of Limousin Romanesque art. It owes its name to the fact that as early as 1105 relics of Saint Bartholomew were placed there, brought back from Benevento in Italy. Their presence encouraged the arrival of pilgrims, already numerous because of the passage of the Way of St. James of Compostela (via Lemovicensis). It was in 1458 that the church was raised to the rank of abbey. Take the time to contemplate its massive porch bell tower, its polylobate entrance portal and its octagonal lantern on the transept crossing, they all contribute to the beauty and remarkable character of the place.
