ABBAYE SAINT-PIERRE
Vigeois is one of the oldest monasteries in the Limousin: its origins are linked to the activities of a 6th-century Limousin saint, Saint-Yrieix. The monastery was destroyed by fire around 1060-1080; the abbey was rebuilt between 1082 and 1121. Most of its history is recorded in the chronicles of the monk Geoffroy de Breuil, prior between 1170 and 1184. This magnificent abbey church is one of the most remarkable examples of Romanesque art and architecture in the Lower Limousin. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1886.
