RUINES DU CHÂTEAU DE LA CHAPOULIE

In the Middle Ages, Cornil had two castles: one near the village and the other near the church, on a rocky escarpment overlooking the village, the Château de la Chapoulie, also known as the "château haut" or "sucquet". A Protestant stronghold, both castles were besieged and destroyed by the Catholic League during the Wars of Religion. The one in the village disappeared during the French Revolution and became a stone quarry. All that remains of the Chapoulie castle is this striking tower in ruins.
