ST. PETER'S PRIORYAL CHURCH
Built of red sandstone in the 11th centuries, this church is a fine example of Romanesque art
Built in red sandstone in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was enlarged in the late Middle Ages by lateral chapels and fortified during the Religion wars in the 16th century. Fine example of Romanesque art, the bell tower (12th century) with gables pass from the square plan to the octagonal plan by a succession of floors. The watchtower which is adjacent to it testifies to the concerns of defence of the places during the Hundred years war. The white limestone portal of Causse is decorated with a finely sculpted tympanum (12th century) that undoubtedly represents the theme of the Ascension treated with a delicate and slender pattern. On the upper level, Christ with crowned head and surrounded by angels stands in the clouds, showing the Book of the Gospels on one hand and blessing with the other. In the lower level the apostles gathered around the Virgin attended the event. Inside, wood painted and gilded baroque altarpiece with the theme of the Passion of Christ, Virgin of Pity in wood made out of wood of the 16th century and a recumbent Christ.
