Castle founded to control the Régordane road, hosts various celebrations including the medieval skills festival

Château de Portes watches over the Cévennes and the ancient Régordane trail. Its architecture blends the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with two distinct periods of construction, including the triangular, bow-shaped building that earns it the nickname of the "ship of the Cévennes", sailing over the mountains. It was erected in the 11th century to control the so-called Régordane road, a passageway for crusaders to the Holy Land and pilgrims to Saint-Gilles. In the 16th century, Antoine Hercule de Budos, a vice-admiral longing for the sea, had his remarkable and enigmatic 49-degree spur built, making it unique in Europe. The village, previously located at the foot of the château, was threatened by mining activity in the early 20th century, and was razed and relocated a little further away. A free parking lot is now available to visitors, and hosts markets and events organized by the Renaissance du Château de Portes association.

The château will be closed for major works in 2025, but its architecture and unique allure can still be admired on its hillside, around the ramparts, which are mostly approachable. That in itself is worth the detour. Until it reopens, the castle's presence will continue to be celebrated with the Estive festival on May 25, the Régordane festival on June 15, the medieval skills festival on August 9 and the donkey festival on September 20. Various markets and celebrations will also be held throughout the summer at the foot of this jewel of Gard's heritage.

Mooi kasteel echt jammer genoeg geheel 2024 gesloten. De sluiting staat alleen fysiek bij het kasteel en niet op de website dus wees gewaarschuwd.
