The Maison du Mineur (Miner's House) in La Grand-Combe, with its museum and mining machine room
The museum tells the story of anthracite mining, an activity inextricably linked with the history of the commune. The entrance hall sets the tone for an industry that flourished for over a century: 180 showers and 1,800 baskets awaited miners at the start and end of the day. The only one of its kind in Europe, the extraction machine room is impressive in its operation. A moving testimony to economic, political and social history, from the miners' daily lives to the workers' struggles, free lectures and workshops are also offered here on a regular basis.
