Overlooking the green landscapes of the Aude hinterland, the Château de Puivert is one of the emblematic jewels of the Cathar region. This historic monument, listed in 1907, is now privately owned. The site comprises two parts: the ruins of a first fortress built in the 12th century, and a second castle, built in the early 14th century and considered one of the best preserved in the region. In the 11th and 12th centuries, it belonged to the Congost family, lords of Puivert and protectors of Catharism, and in 1210 became the property of Lambert de Thury (companion of Simon de Monfort). A century later, a new château was built, better suited to the requirements of a noble residence. The refinement of its carvings, particularly in the famous musicians' room, nestled in the keep, bears striking witness to this. This exceptional room, vaulted and decorated with eight figures playing various instruments, illustrates the cultural wealth of the site. In 1170, a large gathering of troubadours from the Pays d'Oc is said to have been held here, underlining the castle's importance. Access is via a gate-tower once protected by eight flanking towers, five of which are still standing. The keep (35 m) houses four vaulted levels, including the chapel and reception hall.
Thanks to its state of preservation and unique ambience, the château was used as the setting for the film The Ninth Gate, starring Johnny Depp. A timeless place, between history, art and legend, not to be missed!
