STATUE DE FRANÇOISE DE CEZELLY
Statue to discover honoring the city's courageous governor who resisted the Spanish assault in the late 16th century
Françoise de Cezelli was the courageous governor of the town who withstood the onslaught of the Spanish at the end of the 16th century. It took three centuries for Leucate to honor her as she deserved. In 1899, sculptor Paul Ducuing depicted her holding the keys to the town. Like many bronze statues, it was taken to Germany in 1942 to be melted down. A few years ago, however, the mold was found and the statue of the town's heroine was returned to its rightful place!
