Renaissance-style castle, appreciated for the optical illusion of the sun rising and setting in the axis of the vestibule.

Château de Thoiry was built in 1559 for Raoul Moreau, treasurer to King Henry II and an esoteric enthusiast, to further his alchemical research. Built in the Renaissance style, it offers a dazzling spectacle every solstice from its promontory: the sun rises and sets exactly in line with the axis of the vestibule, creating an exceptional optical illusion. Still inhabited by the de la Panouse family for over four centuries, it's well worth stopping off for a visit, along with its gardens (open from June to August), on the way to the zoo.
