With its cobbled streets lined with colorful shuttered houses, the old village of Marly-le-Roi is a pleasant destination for a stroll, after a stroll in the national estate park and before ending the escapade in one of the restaurants on the main street. In the 17th and 18th centuries, winegrowers, shopkeepers, château staff and a few bourgeois lived here. The Grande Rue, opposite the park entrance, and the adjoining streets are lined with fine ashlar buildings and rural houses with dormer windows, giving the area an air of Provence. Rue Madame is named after Princess Palatine, who once stayed in the town; at no. 6, Alexandre Stavisky, one of the greatest swindlers of the 20th century, was arrested. In Place de la Vierge, a statue commemorates the original church, destroyed in the 17th century and replaced by Saint-Etienne-Saint-Vigor on the orders of Louis XIV. The Place Victorien Sardou houses the entrance to the Château du Verduron, with its imposing avenue of sphinxes. Last but not least, you'll find the Hôtel de Ville, housed in the heart of the King's former kennel, with its Parc du Chenil and bucolic 19th-century English garden.
