Built in the mid-17th century to designs by the famous architect François Mansart, the Château de Maisons was built for René de Longueil, Louis XIV's Superintendent of Finances, and designed to welcome the Sun King after his hunting expeditions. Its majesty, symmetry, balanced forms and elegant roofs make it a model for French classical art, and a precursor to Versailles. The estate remained the property of the Longueil family and their descendants until 1777, when it was acquired by the Comte d'Artois, brother of Louis XVI. The 19th century saw a succession of owners, including Marshal Lannes and banker Jacques Laffitte. In 1905, the building was purchased by the French state and became an annex of the sculpture department of the Musée du Louvre. It wasn't until 1980 that the château was opened to the public on a daily basis. Inside, visitors can admire the Grande Galerie, the King's and Queen's apartments, the vestibule d'honneur and its grand staircase, Gobelins tapestries, furniture and paintings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. There are several options for your visit: self-guided tours of the château and grounds, lecture tours or guided tours of the apartments. During the vacations, workshops are also organized to help you discover the monument in a fun way.
