Over the centuries, the basilica was built around the tomb of Saint Denis, martyred around 250 A.D. Different architectural styles were used from the5th to the 13th century. In addition to its Carolingian crypt, the basilica, an emblem of Gothic architecture, is best known as the final resting place of the kings of France, with its collection of tombs and stained glass windows. The ones you'll see are copies, the originals having been removed due to their fragility.

Open all year round. Closed on January 1, May 1, November 1 and 11, December 25 and during certain religious services. Low season: Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5:15pm; Sunday, 12pm to 5:15pm. High season: Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6:15pm; Sunday, 12pm to 6:15pm. Access 30 minutes before closing time. Please note that exceptional opening times may apply throughout the year, depending on the calendar. Free admission for children under 18. Adults: €11. Audioguide: €3. Guided tour.
