LA FONTAINE MOLIÈRE
Fountain surmounted by a nymph, built opposite no. 40 rue de Richelieu, Paris
In 1838, the house opposite 40 rue de Richelieu, Molière's last home, was demolished. A fountain with a nymph was originally planned, but François-Joseph Regnier, an actor with the Comédie-Française, proposed a different idea: to use the demolition as an opportunity to honor the playwright. The fountain was finally inaugurated in 1844, under the direction of Louis Tullius Joachim Visconti and Antoine Vivenel, already responsible for the Saint-Sulpice fountain. The statue of Molière shows him seated, in an almost majestic pose.
