THE CLIFF BELOW THE STATE
Étretat’s most famous cliff boasts oyster beds, the Trou à l’Homme and a beautiful view of the Porte d’Aval.
The most famous in Etretat, without doubt. But it’s not until low tide that it reveals its secrets. The walk begins at the oyster beds: these basins were dug at the end of the 18th century at the request of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Past the oyster beds, the cliff reveals the Trou à l’Homme. Then we climb up to the bay of the little port, from where we have a fine view of the Porte d’Aval and the Aiguille creuse, 70 m high. The second gate, also known as Manneporte, is 90 m high, and Maupassant referred to it as a "Gothic gate capable of letting through a ship under full sail". The walk continues to the pointe de la Courtine, then along the Antifer valley, home to numerous birds, to the plage du Tilleul. Climbing back up the cliff, you can then return to Etretat along the GR21, enjoying some fine views of the town. Near the golf course, you’ll discover the chambre des Demoiselles.
