Petit Futé's opinion on NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL

Plate millesim 2022

The primatial cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, from the primitive to the flamboyant, recognizable by its facade carved like a lace of stone. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Rouen and the capital of the ecclesiastical province of Normandy. It still has its archiepiscopal palace and its annexes from the same period. Considered the highest in France, its history goes back to the 4th century with a cathedral group built in the center of the city, as an affirmation of the new religion. It was followed by a Romanesque cathedral begun around 1020, after the fire caused by the Viking in 841 and the baptism of their leader, Rollon, in 912. It was consecrated in 1063, in the presence of Duke William, the future Conqueror. The Gothic style arrives in 1145 with the Saint-Romain tower, and asserts itself in the 1240's with the choir, the nave, the side chapels, the axis chapel, the western facade, the cloister of the canons, the portals of the Librarians and the Calende. In 1462, the Saint-Romain tower was completed and, in addition to its nine bells, was equipped with the Marie d'Estouteville and the Guillaume. In 1479, the Librarians' staircase was built, leading from the transept to the chapter library, and at the end of 1485, the Butter Tower was built on the south side. On the transept crossing, the lantern tower, built after the fire of Easter 1200, was again subject to the fire of its spire in 1514, then the one of 1822, triggered by lightning. Its current cast iron spire, dating from 1876, is 151 m high and is undergoing a final restoration to be completed in 2022. Inside, the ambulatory houses the tombs of the Dukes of Normandy. Among them, Richard the Lionheart, who demanded that his heart be kept in the crypt, and Mathilde the Empress, the famous "White Lady" of Mortemer, who died in 1167. The crypt, which is said to have housed the relics of the Virgin, can be visited. Removed after the 1944 bombings, nine of the restored paintings have found their place, such as the Saint John the Baptist in the desert and the Death of Saint Joseph. The stained glass windows, from the famous Barbe glass workshop, represent a beautiful collection of the history of stained glass, from the 12th century to the present day. Since 2019, the great organ has been under restoration. Immortalized by Claude Monet in a series of 30 paintings, the building was painted by the father of Impressionism from the second floor of the Finance Office (the OT) located just across the street. All year long, guided tours, night tours by candlelight, sounds and lights, concerts are organized.

A voir absolument
