A small, triangular-shaped building perched on the Amont cliff, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is most famous for the view it affords from up there. We particularly recommend a visit at sunset, when the colors of the late afternoon shimmer on the water of the English Channel. This neo-Gothic building, built in 1856 as a tribute to sailors, has a stone silhouette with a slate gable roof. Its ashlar facades, embellished with fish-shaped gargoyles, complete this unique little look. Built following a mission preached by the Reverend Père Michel in 1854, with the support of the local population, it was rebuilt in 1950 and renamed "Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde".

It's impossible to visit Étretat without enjoying its superb pebble beach.

Good to know: the beach is dog-friendly.

Sand castles aren't possible here, but they're more than made up for by the superb view. The 1 kilometer-long beach stretches between the Aval and Amont cliffs. You feel so small down there, and yet incredibly lucky to be able to admire such an environment! When it comes to swimming, the waters of the English Channel are not suitable for everyone... It rarely exceeds 19°C, even in summer, which makes swimming inaccessible to many people. On the other hand, this is an excellent opportunity to take to the water in a kayak or boat, and explore the beautiful blue expanse that beckons.

12. Admire the Nungesser et Coli Monument

At the top of the Amont cliff stands the famous Nungesser et Col monument, a poignant tribute to two great men. This spire-shaped edifice was erected in honor of the two eponymous aviators. On May 8, 1872, Nungesser and Col undertook a daring non-stop crossing of the North Atlantic aboard "L'Oiseau Blanc", a Levasseur PL8. Unfortunately, their final destination was never reached, and their last appearance was over the cliffs of Étretat. However, the town did not hesitate to erect this tribute, designed by architect Rey and sculptors Descatoire and Petit.

At 24 metres in height, you won't want to miss it! The original work was damaged during the German occupation, but the whole remains superb and well worth a visit.
