CHATEAU RIEUSSEC

Winery

Contiguous with Château d'Yquem, the Château Rieussec vineyard extends at the junction of Fargues and Sauternes. With its 93 ha of sandy-clayey gravelly soil, it is one of the most important properties of Sauternes and Barsac. Semillon, the emblematic grape variety of Sauternes, dominates (90%), complemented by Sauvignon (7%) and Muscadelle (3%). Fermentation is carried out in barrels and each vintage is aged in oak barrels, mainly from the Tonnellerie des Domaines, half of which are renewed each year. The duration of ageing in barrels varies according to the vintage from 16 to 26 months during which the wines are periodically racked. Bottling is carried out at the Château. During the 1855 Classification, the quality of the Rieussec terroir was recognized as a Premier Cru Classé de Sauternes et Barsac. A wine tasting is offered after a visit to the property. Visits are by appointment only. From the monks of the Carmelites of Langon to a succession of numerous owners, Château Rieussec was acquired by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984.
