Petit Futé's opinion on IMPRESSIONISM MUSEUM GIVERNY

Plate millesim 2022

Between Paris and Rouen, the Musée des Impressionnismes is certainly one of the most beautiful museums in Normandy. Since its opening in 2009, close to Claude Monet's house, its ambition is to be a high place of regional impressionism, in an exceptional setting combining art and nature. It presents innovative exhibitions dedicated to Impressionism and its French and international influences, particularly in Europe and North America. If you visit the museum with children, don't hesitate to consult the website to pique their curiosity beforehand. You'll find coloring pages, origami games and an interactive story that will surely seduce them! The museum's program is always rich, with different exhibitions taking place in 2022: Monet/Rothko from March 18 to July 3, 2022, The Summer of the Collection from July 14 to October 2, 2022 and Carte blanche à l'art contemporain from October 14 to January 8. If the temporary exhibitions are always particularly interesting, the permanent exhibition composed of original masterpieces of the great masters of Impressionism is also worth a visit. It was made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and now includes 212 works as well as a number of important archives. Among the major works is Water Lilies with Willow Branches by Claude Monet. This painting is part of the impressive Water Lilies series that the artist painted based on views of his garden. Water lilies with willow branches dates from 1916-1919. This painting remained in his studio after the artist's death and was then offered by Michel Monet to the Claude Monet High School, before being deposited at the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny in 2021. We find this harmony and this impression of immensity dear to Claude Monet. The museum also exhibits Parterre de marguerites by Gustave Caillebotte. It was after the exhibition "Caillebotte, painter and gardener" held in 2016 that the Musée des Impressionnismes acquired this work thanks to the generosity of patrons and the public. This production initially presented in the form of four panels is in fact composed of several fragments. Thanks to the important restoration work undertaken by the museum, the different pieces have been reassembled and form today a unique work, which was exhibited for the first time in 2021 during the exhibition "Côté jardin. From Monet to Bonnard". Caillebotte's objective was to bring his garden into his house in Petit-Gennevilliers. It is thus a bold representation of nature, which certainly evokes the Japanese tradition - especially with the motif of daisies - that French painters discovered in the second half of the 19th century. Among the most important collections of the museum is also that of the contemporary Japanese painter Hiramatsu Reiji, who uses the technique of nihonga - which literally means "Japanese painting". This term dates back to the late 19th century and was created to designate the traditional painting of the country. Today it is a demanding technique that uses precious materials such as silk, gold leaf or natural pigments such as lapis lazuli for the blue or carmine for the red. The Musée des Impressionnismes houses 22 paintings, 25 drawings but also sketchbooks and screens of the painter Hiramatsu Reiji. A beautiful collection to discover. The photographic collection of the museum is also important. There are precious pictures by Bernard Plossu with the garden and the house of Claude Monet as a background. A photograph by André Ostier shows Marc Chagall near the water lily pond. The Musée des Impressionnismes de Giverny is the successor of the American Art Museum founded in 1992. It is located in the heart of the village of Giverny, on the hill where Claude Monet painted "Les Meules". The original structure of the museum was designed by architects Philippe Robert and Daniel J. Terra, who succeeded in creating a partially buried building with green roofs that blends in perfectly with the surrounding nature. The large windows provide natural light and open onto the garden where more than 22,000 flowers are planted. Don't hesitate to stroll through the garden to enjoy the flower beds, ponds and small hedges that create a unique setting that invites you to relax, far from the noise of the city. This French-style garden was designed by landscape architect Mark Rudkin. The decor evolves with the seasons and colors are always in the spotlight. There is a white garden with tulips and lilies, a black garden with elder trees and, of course, beds with the three primary colors. The garden leads to a meadow covered with poppies in spring and haystacks - the ones that inspired Claude Monet - in summer. A true impressionist painting! It is important to know that no chemical products are used for the maintenance of the garden: nature brings a balance here thanks to the insects or the plants that grow spontaneously. The garden of the Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny received the label Jardin remarquable in 2006 and is part of the network of refuges of the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux.

A bientôt !

Bonjour loulou13,
