The small Hermitage chapel in Arbois, with its esplanade offering a superb view over the Cuisance valley.
Listed as a historical monument since 1913, the small Hermitage chapel dates back to the 17th century. It was built on the site of an earlier 15th-century chapel by the people of Arbois to thank the Virgin Mary for helping them resist the troops of Louis XI. It houses a wooden statuette of the Virgin, said to have been discovered in an oak tree by a Dutch hermit who retired there in the 17th century. For walkers, allow an hour round trip from the town center.
