HOLY-JUST CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels
4.3/5
4 reviews

The church of Saint-Just is easily identifiable thanks to its unusual bell tower: its rounded top, decorated with ochre-coloured tiles as well as those of its local stones. Defying the sky, this 17th century giant stretches to 60 m and dominates the city. Once located in the centre of a fortified Benedictine priory, the church served as an unobstructed observation point in the event of an invasion. Come in and you won't be disappointed! Admire the nave and the aisles typical of Burgundian Romanesque art from the 11th and 12th centuries. The carved wooden pulpit dates back to the 13th century. In the background, the imposing Marin Carouge organ of 1728 has just been restored and has given rise to musical festivals. Lovers of ecclesiastical spaces will also be charmed by right-wing chapels from various periods (until the 19th century) offering beautiful architectural features and a sublime statue of the Virgin and Child from the 14th century.

This building was built in the th century to host the Ursulines Convent, the nuns who devoted themselves to educating poor girls. Sold as a national property after the Revolution, he became a city hotel in 1802. From the convent, only the entrance of the chapel, dating from the th century, is located next to the current entrance of the city hall. Two stairs were erected in 1865. On the facade there is a crest bearing the coat of arms of the city. It represents a pelican mother opening the heart to feed her little ones. Gouttes blood drops from the bird's gosier. A currency accompanies the animal which is the emblem of the city: Sic my quos diligo that can be translated by «Thus do me for those whom I cherish». The municipality offers various exhibitions of artists or local crafts, as well as lectures, lectures and concerts.
