Ancient cathedral dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, to be visited at the Mariana archaeological site for its portal
The ancient Cathedral of Canonica, located on the archaeological site of Mariana, is one of Corsica's oldest surviving religious buildings. Dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption, it was consecrated in 1118 and became the seat of the bishopric in the 13th century. Take a close look at its portal: adorned with a Christ-like lamb and a wolf, as well as creatures from ancient mythology and Persian legends, it is a perfect illustration of Mediterranean syncretism in the Middle Ages.
