THE ISLAND OF CAVALLO
Located between Corsica and Sardinia, it is the southernmost residential area in metropolitan France. 12 ha which, since 1970, have seen their herds replaced by luxurious residences rented today at 25,000 euros per week, an aerodrome and private ports invaded by luxury yachts. The fortune or notoriety of some villa owners on the island and the fact that cruising boats simply pass offshore have earned Cavallo its nickname as the island of billionaires. It is possible to get to this island with the paid shuttle from Piantarella beach. As the construction of new housing has been blocked for several years by the authorities due to sanitation problems, abandoned construction sites can be found almost everywhere on the island. Historically, this island was exploited by the Romans who sent prisoners there to extract granite for the construction of temples. Two Roman shipwrecks have been discovered near Cavallo. The site of the former quarry has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1992. After the departure of the Romans, the island was abandoned until 1800, when a shepherd came to live there alone with his herd. As the beaches and paths are indeed communal, nothing and no one will prevent you from enjoying a visit to the island that deserves better than its reputation.
