Around 1162, Dampierre-le-Château became the fiefdom of the Count of Champagne Henri I. His faithful vassals, the lords of Astenois from Vieil-Dampierre, settled in a fortified castle located on the present mound of Dampierre, south of the church of Saint-Maurice. The village then took the name of Dampierre-en-Astenois. The village then became the seat of the county of Dampierre. The castle was burnt down during the wars of religion between 1545 and 1555, there are no remains of it.
