Set in a verdant setting south of Bergerac, the history of this château will captivate you and keep you coming back for more.
This medieval castle was built between the 12th and 19th centuries. It has four round towers with machicolation and a fifth, large round tower, which supports the projecting corner of the two main buildings. Outside, the square, timber-framed dovecote is built on nine round stone piers. After years of setbacks, Château de Bridoire has been revived by its defenders, who fought to prevent it from falling into ruin, and by its new owners, the Guyot family, who love their heritage. They scoured antique shops, second-hand dealers and auction rooms to find the period furniture. They reconstructed the walnut panelling in the late 19th-century dining room, and rediscovered the 18th-century marble floor. There's even a spit and brassware in the kitchen! The fireplaces have been restored to their original condition, as have the paintings, hunting trophies and candlesticks. The large guards' room has been restored to its original size (Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV, had lunch there), as has the King's bedroom. The Marquise de Foucauld's apartment and Père de Foucauld's bedroom have also been restored. Here, you'll find faithfully reconstructed historical games, as well as indoor and outdoor activities. In summer, every Thursday and Saturday evening from 8pm, Bridoire can be visited by candlelight (with an aperitif on Thursdays!). Games and entertainment take place in the castle courtyard.
