From 750 to 1786, the commune changed seven times and it was not until 1960 that it became Piney, the chief town of the canton. The illustrious imperial house of Luxembourg, after its departure from the present grand duchy, settled here from the end of the Middle Ages until the Revolution. Piney was then the capital of the duchy of Piney-Luxembourg. The town is also known for its 16th century market hall, which was also used as a shed for Napoleon's crews. In the past, it hosted up to four fairs a year, but now it houses the market: no longer peaceful, but a fine signature of a town where the power of the lord of Piney was recognised!
