Shelters at the foot of a fascinating cliff in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, one of the world's first prehistoric shelters excavated in 1864.
Laugerie Basse was one of the first prehistoric shelters ever excavated, back in 1864, when the term "prehistory" was first appearing in dictionaries. Situated at the foot of a spectacular 60-metre-high cliff, the site revealed a huge concentration of artefacts found in a single location. It was also here that the prehistoric Venus was discovered. Visits are free and accompanied by booklets, tablets and 3D projections. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the site is at the heart of France's 20th Grand Site.
